Carlos Mencia at McGlohon Theatre

“He’s undoubtedly one of today’s most lauded entertainers and feared comics. Whether it is man-on-the-street interviews, studio comedy, commercial parodies, or nationwide sold-out tours, Mencia demonstrates an extraordinary ability to connect with a diverse audience.”
Tonight is the second night of of his comedy tour and he’s twittered on his website how Raleigh was a great audience. Get out there and show him an even better crowd from us Charlotte folks. Just remember, he’s not for the easily offended.
Downtown Raleigh Restaurant Week

If you haven’t been over to Raleigh for Restaurant Week don’t miss out on your chance this weekend. Restaurant week started this past Monday, Aug. 23 and it ends Sunday, Aug. 29.
This year approximately 29 restaurants are offering 3-course meals for just $20 or $30 depending on the venue. You can’t beat that deal any other time of year.
Your best chance at your favorite downtown restaurant is to make a reservation. Please remember that tip, taxes and beverages not included in the price stated above.

African Dance Classes

What is a great way to burn off some calories and have plenty of fun at the same time? Take African dance classes of course!
Oneaka Dance Company will have an African Dance class, Saturday, Aug. 28 from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM.
The cost is free with Harvey Gantt Museum admission and for members.
In African Dance classes with Oneaka Dance Company each movement becomes your movement. Your movements mesh with the drum rhythms to create your plan for a healthier you. Get to know your body by doing breathing exercises, stretching your muscles, moving within your body’s capacity and expanding that capacity in way that will make you both physically and culturally fit. You can choose to turn it up or down.

Breaking Silence at Knight Theater

Are you ready for another play. Breaking Silence, a play about two young adults that fall in love, is playing at Knight Theater in Charlotte.
This is truly a modern day story that test a couples love against the temptations of society.
Justin Mann tells the story that many of us know all to well through movement, music, and passion. How do couples survive the strains of outside influences? Mann takes this issue head on and illustrates the real fears and pains in the gamble of falling in love. What happens when you really open your soul to someone and decide to go on the ride of your life? Does it pay off or will it leave you heartless? Breaking Silence is the new love story.
Watch this play Thursday, Aug. 26 at 8pm. Tickets are $25.50 – $29.50.

SuperCaliFragilisticeXPiAlidocious: MARY POPPINS at the Theatre
Posted on August 20, 2010 · 1 CommentOne of the most popular Disney films of all time, Mary Poppins, is coming to the stage of the Belk Theatre this August and September.
I can’t wait to hear classic songs like, Chim Chim Cher-ee, A Spoonful of Sugar, and, of course, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
The New York Post gives 4 out of 4 stars and called it “a perfect piece of musical theater.”
The show will run from Aug. 25 through Sept. 19 at The Belk Theatre in Charlotte.

Poetry Slams in Charlotte

SlamCharlotte, is a two time defending national championship team of spoken word poetry (2007 & 2008). The groups current Slammaster, Bluz, is the 13th ranked individual poet in the world.

This Week at The Theatre

The play is based off of work by Patrick Hamilton and the movie by Alfred Hitchcock in 1948.

This is a story of murder and lies. Two males kill their classmate and then have a dinner party with members of the victim’s family and friends in attendance.
This show is recommended for ages 18 years old and up. The play runs from Aug. 19- Sept. 4.

Charlotte Irish Summer Festival this Weekend

This weekend check out live bands like Ceol na Gael, Clanndarragh, Fighting 86’s, McLean Avenue, Trad at Heart, Vertigo. You can also see Irish influenced dance groups like Rince na h’Eireann School of Irish Dance and Walsh Kelley School of Irish Dancing.

Tutto Mondo Takeover Friday

To celebrate the closing of the store, the lounge is hosting Takeover Friday, a mobile party where bartenders and guest DJs who have worked the lounge from past to present will be in attendance.
The event will be this Friday from 7 p.m.-2 a.m. at Tutto Mondo.
